I was an active supporter and pusher of Careerbuilder.com for a couple of years now. Frankly, I supported them because of their attempt to market directly to African American, Hispanic, Asian and other diverse populations.
I am the webmaster of a website that focuses on Missouri’s history called, http://blackmissouri.com. It’s a project for which I feel personally obligated to complete as I strive to document the positive contributions of African Americans to the state of Missouri.
But after applying for several jobs, I discovered that most companies posted ads on CareerBuilder only as a means for them to follow their company’s hiring policy. However, I may be completely wrong and i welcome anyone to tell me differently, but it seems to me that all too frequently, when companies post a job opening on CareerBuilder.com, they have probably decided to hire from within.
Now this is to not to say that I have never had an interview nor gotten a job from CareerBuilder. Because I have! But I cannot tell you how many times the interviewer said that they posted an ad on CareerBuilder and received 1000′s of resumes to filter through and it left even the employer feeling a bit overwhelmed.
So I surveyed 75 of my SEO, PPC, Online marketing pals from around the country and asked them a question: “How many online job boards do you have your resume posted on?”
Here are the results:
24% – posted on 1 to 2 job boards
29% – posted on 3 to 4 job boards
18% – posted on 5 or more job boards
29% – Do not have their resume posted online
Nearly 54% of respondents agreed that geographic and industry-specific job sites are most effective when searching for a job!
And I did the unthinkable. I called 25 HR professionals and Recruiters who were hiring tech people and, 84% said niche sites provide access to the best talent, while only 11% gave the nod to general-purpose recruitment sites.

So stay away from Careerbuilder and turn some of that energy towards marketing yourself on niche job boards. For example, you might be that type of geek who likes working for non-profits. Or, maybe you would like to work on political campaigns. Maybe, you are a geeky-foodie kind who wants to work in the food and beverage industry. No matter the industry, find sites that market to that niche and eliminate many of the competitors for that job.
